
Specialized Postgraduate Training Opportunity in Hematology – Implemented by AISPO and Funded by the Italian Cooperation (AICS)
We are pleased to announce a specialized postgraduate training opportunity for Sierra Leonean medical doctors interested in advancing their professional competencies in the field of hematology.
The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Technical High Education, in collaboration with AISPO and with the framework of the Project title: Professional and academic training for the consolidation of the blood transfusion system in Sierra Leone – Phase III” – AID 013244/07/4 funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), is offering the opportunity for a total of three (3) Medical Doctors to undertake specialized training in hematology. One Medical Doctor will be selected for each of the following training tracks:
- Onco-hematology
- Hemoglobinopathies
- Hematological diagnostics
In addition, the program requires one (1) qualified nurse to support clinical management within the hematology framework, ensuring comprehensive patient care and practical training in the clinical setting; and one (1) medical doctor to undertake a dedicated training track focused on management and leadership in transfusion medicine, aimed at strengthening coordination and governance capacities.
The selected candidates will be assigned to the hospital hosting the postgraduate training in hematology. The training will take place in Italy in 2026, at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, in collaboration with Vita-Salute University (UniSR). The course will also continue in Freetown, within the framework of COMAHS, specifically under the supervision of USLTHC, ensuring practical and clinical training in the local context.
Selection Process
To ensure that the most qualified candidates are selected for this highly specialized opportunity, a formal selection process will be conducted in Freetown. The selection process will consist of an interview conducted by a joint Sierra Leonean and Italian committee.

Please note that applicants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements. Neither AISPO nor the MoH/MTHE will cover these expenses for the interview.
The Evaluation Committee will include representatives from the Ministry of Health (MoH), the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE), and AISPO experts.
Eligibility Criteria
Requirement
Medical Doctor
- A Sierra Leon national
- Hold a Medical Degree (MBChB or equivalent) and be registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Sierra Leone.
- Be a PIN-coded staff member of the Ministry of Health (MoH).
- Have at least two (2) years’ experience in the field of medicine, biosecurity, or related disciplines.
Hematology Nurse
- A Sierra Leon national
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or SRN.
- License with the Sierra Leone Nurses’ Board
- Be a PIN-coded staff member of the Ministry of Health (MoH).
- At least two (2) years of documented experience in hematology, onco-hematology, or in the clinical management of patients with hemoglobinopathies or other blood disorders.

- Proof of appointment letter from the MoH, indicating PIN code status.
