Ministry of Health: Advancing Child Survival Goals with Dr. Austin Demby’s Leadership

Leadership

The recent gathering of Health Ministers at the WHO Regional Committee for Africa in Botswana marked a significant step towards a healthier future for Africa’s children. Central to these discussions was Sierra Leone’s own Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby. His recent appointment has not only elevated our nation’s stance in the global health arena but has also facilitated a wealth of fruitful conversations aimed at the betterment of child health across the continent.

The focus of the meeting in Botswana was unmistakable: to form a unified movement to drastically reduce the harrowing numbers of children who do not live to see their fifth birthday. Every year, millions of young lives are tragically cut short, and this shared vision aims to change that narrative.

In his capacity as Vice Chair, Dr. Demby fervently called upon African leaders to rally together to reach Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.2. This goal highlights the urgency to end preventable deaths of new-borns and children under 5 years of age by 2030. As a passionate advocate for child survival, Dr. Demby highlighted the critical importance of these efforts, not just for Sierra Leone but for the entirety of Africa.

The proactive stance taken by leaders like Dr. Demby signals a bright future where African children can thrive and reach their full potential. Through collaborative efforts and a shared commitment, the continent can look forward to achieving substantial improvements in child survival rates. Sierra Leone, with Dr. Demby’s guidance, stands ready to contribute significantly to this noble cause, ensuring a healthier tomorrow for all of Africa’s children.
