This is the second such facility in Sierra Leone.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Mustapha Kabba, officially opens the new stroke unit at the Kenema Government Hospital.

Giving his keynote speech, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Mustapha Kabba, said that the stroke unit is a testament to the Ministry of Health’s, under the leadership of Dr. Austin Demby, commitment to providing the highest standard of medical care to patients. With stroke being one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, the establishment of this dedicated unit marks a significant leap forward in tackling this medical emergency.

Dr Kabbah added that the unit boasts of a range of cutting-edge technologies designed to expedite the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

“From advanced imaging techniques to telemedicine capabilities, the Stroke Unit will ensure that patients receive prompt and accurate assessments, enabling the medical team to make informed decisions as swiftly as possible,” he said.

One of the standout features of the new facility, according to Dr. Kabbah, is its multidisciplinary approach to giving care. The team, which comprises of nurses, physical therapists, and rehabilitation specialists, works collaboratively to provide comprehensive and personalized treatment plans for each patient.

The Deputy Chairperson at the Kenema District Council, Mrs. Francess Jambawai stated that, the opening of the unit is highly welcome by the local community and healthcare professionals. She said that the unit is expected to alleviate the burden on emergency departments and provide a dedicated space for stroke patients to receive the specialized care they require.

As part of the hospital’s commitment to community education and awareness, the stroke unit will also offer outreach programs to educate the public about the signs and symptoms of the condition, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and seeking immediate medical attention. This holistic approach ensures that patients receive the best possible care from the moment they enter the unit to their successful rehabilitation.
